[Video] Interview w/Gluten Free Couple Nandi & Rafe

The World is Gluten Free Team created the Educate & Enlist: The Gluten Free Movement blog series to spotlight our Gluten Free Allies and Recruiters who make our lives easier! In our first interview, we sat down with Gluten Free Ally, Joyce Wu, a New York based filmmaker who shared with us her GREAT TIPS on how to support friends who are gluten free. Hint, hint: You might want to passed it on to your loved ones…if you haven’t already!

This time, to usher in Celiac Awareness Month, we sat down with an amazing Gluten Free Couple:

Nandi Cohen (Celiac sister) & Rafael Aponte.

Learn their AMAZING tips on how to navigate a relationship when one of the partners are gluten free.

Nandi has been a Celiac sister in our Gluten Free family for 8 years and will begin her role as Assistant Professor at Cornell University in the fall (#impressive). Rafael is a Gluten Free Ally, Food Justice activist, organic farmer and, if you haven’t guessed, Nandi’s UBER supportive boyfriend (#impressive).

Just in case you have to run, here are the 5 pieces of GLUTEN FREE COUPLE ADVICE that Nandi and Rafe offered:

 • Cook TOGETHER to best support each other!

 • Non-Celiacs, try to put yourself in your partner's shoes.

 • You CAN manage this lifestyle with your partner! Always consider gluten free substitutions to favorite dishes!

 • Celiacs and Gluten Freers, be honest and upfront about your medical condition. Be crystal clear about your needs and limitations.

 • Keep a positive outlook. Emphasize what you CAN do and CAN eat! (Note: There are PLENTY of things!)

*The Gluten Free Movement is the increasing awareness of the needs of people who must maintain a gluten free diet. There are millions of people all over the world whose bodies cannot healthily process gluten. (We told you it wasn't a trend.) The Gluten Free Movement is fueled by the actions of organizations, institutions and, above all, recruiters and allies, who insist that are voices be heard and needs be met!
